Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Saint Lucia Customs and Excise Department regulates the import of goods into the country. Travelers are entitled to duty-free allowances for personal items, but must declare items exceeding these limits or any prohibited/restricted goods. Failure to declare can result in penalties, confiscation, or prosecution.
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs and narcotics - Saint Lucia has strict drug laws with severe penalties including imprisonment
- Firearms, ammunition, and explosives - unless proper permits obtained in advance from Commissioner of Police
- Counterfeit goods and pirated materials - includes fake designer items, bootleg media
- Obscene or pornographic materials - subject to local standards and laws
- Fresh fruits, vegetables, and plant materials - unless accompanied by phytosanitary certificate to prevent agricultural pests
- Meat and meat products - unless accompanied by veterinary health certificate
- Endangered species and products - includes ivory, certain shells, coral, and products from protected animals under CITES
- Camouflage clothing and accessories - prohibited for civilian use in Saint Lucia
Restricted Items
- Prescription medications - must be in original packaging with prescription or doctor's letter; quantities should be reasonable for personal use during stay
- Live animals and pets - require import permit from Veterinary and Livestock Services Division and health certificates; subject to quarantine requirements
- Plants and seeds - require phytosanitary certificate from country of origin and import permit from Ministry of Agriculture
- Drones and radio communication devices - may require permits from relevant authorities; check before bringing
- Professional equipment - cameras, video equipment, musical instruments for professional use may require temporary import permit or deposit
Health Requirements
Saint Lucia has specific health requirements for entry, particularly regarding vaccinations for travelers from certain regions. While the country is generally healthy with good medical facilities in Castries, travelers should ensure they meet all health requirements before departure.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever - Required for travelers aged 1 year and older arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, or who have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport of a country with yellow fever risk. Valid certificate must be presented at immigration.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Routine vaccinations - Ensure up-to-date on routine vaccines including MMR, DTP, chickenpox, polio, and yearly flu shot
- Hepatitis A - Recommended for most travelers as contamination can occur through food or water
- Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical procedures
- Typhoid - Recommended for travelers visiting smaller cities, rural areas, or adventurous eaters
- Rabies - Consider for travelers with outdoor/wildlife exposure or extended stays
Health Insurance
While not mandatory for entry, comprehensive travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Castries are adequate for routine issues, but serious conditions may require evacuation to nearby islands or North America. Ensure your insurance covers COVID-19 related medical treatment if applicable. Many hotels and tour operators may request proof of insurance.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport (child passports accepted). If a child is traveling with only one parent or with someone other than parents, carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s) authorizing the travel. This letter should include contact information, travel dates, and destinations. Birth certificates may be requested to prove relationship. Divorced or separated parents should carry custody documents. Unaccompanied minors (under 18) traveling alone require special documentation and airline approval.
Pets require an import permit from the Veterinary and Livestock Services Division, obtained before travel. Dogs and cats must have microchip identification, current rabies vaccination (at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel), veterinary health certificate issued within 7 days of travel, and may require blood titer tests. Pets from rabies-free countries may have reduced requirements. Upon arrival, pets may be inspected and could face quarantine (typically 30 days for dogs and cats from non-approved countries). Certain breeds may be restricted. Contact the Chief Veterinary Officer well in advance: +1-758-468-4900. Fees apply for permits and inspections.
Tourist visas typically allow stays of 6 weeks to 3 months. To extend your stay, apply to the Immigration Department in Castries before your authorized stay expires. Bring your passport, proof of sufficient funds, return ticket (may need to be updated), accommodation proof, and extension fee (approximately EC$100-200). Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration officials. For stays longer than 6 months, you may need to apply for a different visa category. Working in Saint Lucia requires a work permit arranged by your employer before arrival. Students need acceptance from a recognized institution and must apply for a student permit. Overstaying without authorization can result in fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans.
Business visitors entering for meetings, conferences, or negotiations can usually enter visa-free (if from eligible countries) for up to 6 weeks. Carry letter from employer stating purpose and duration of visit, and invitation letter from Saint Lucian business contact. If conducting work or providing services, a work permit is required regardless of visit duration. Business equipment may require temporary import documentation. Keep all receipts and documentation for customs purposes.
Cruise passengers are typically granted shore passes rather than standard entry stamps, valid only for the duration of the ship's port call (usually 8-12 hours). Passport required; some nationalities may need visas even for shore visits. Keep track of ship departure time as immigration does not monitor your return. If you miss your ship, you'll need to arrange onward travel and may require a standard entry stamp. Shore passes don't count toward tourist visa duration if you later enter Saint Lucia by air or stay longer.
Saint Lucia may deny entry to individuals with criminal records, particularly for serious offenses. Visa applications require disclosure of criminal history. Even visa-exempt travelers can be refused entry at the border if criminal records are discovered. Be honest on applications and consider seeking legal advice if you have concerns. Minor offenses from many years ago may not be an issue, but recent or serious convictions (especially drug-related) will likely result in denied entry.
